The Shift
ART TAKES SEOUL | Nov. 15 - Dec. 13, 2012
Knox Gallery's last exhibition, Art Takes Seoul, closed on December 13, 2012. Art Takes Seoul was a collaborative exhibition that featured the work of Knox Gallery's then resident artist, Mira Gandy, and one woman play Seoul for Sale in NYC written and performed by Korean American playwright, Ahrum Claiborne. Through the power of exposal, the exhibition explored themes of identity, filial relationships, personal triumph, 1980's hip-hop and pop culture and the notion of the "American Dream." The word "Seoul" in the exhibition's title is viewed as a homophone, indicting not just a "country " but "soul". Thus, emphasizing both artists belief, that the passion and spirit behind an artist's work is a prerequisite for meaningful creation.

Mira Gandy's recent works include mixed media paintings, collages and video imagery that explore such themes as memory, nostalgia, journey and pop culture. Ahrum Claiborne portrayed seven different characters in the autobiographical story that chronicled her journey from South Korea to the streets of New York City, during the 1980's Hip Hop era. When merged, the exhibition presented a commentary on the use of life experience in art as a catalyst for human connection and the bridging of cultural gaps.

Art Takes Seoul at Knox Gallery opened on Thursday, November 15th and closed on December 13, 2012.
